Guardian: the solution to reporting police behavior

During a 48-hour hack-a-thon our team dreamed up, designed, and executed Guardian. The UX designers on the team were myself and Elle Chun. Guardian is about to disrupt the public service industry and create transparency that does not currently exist.

The Problem

Cops are an active part of our daily lives. The public needs a safe platform to be able to easily give feedback based on our experiences with the police force. We want to weed out bad cops, but also be able to reward the good cops that protect and serve our community. Just as police officers serve to protect us, we want a say to be able to protect the amazing officers in our community as well.

Research

Black lives matter is a huge public issue currently. There have been hundreds of peaceful protests and gatherings all around the country, just in the last few months. Social media and facebook live and movements like #blacklivesmatter are platforms where people are voicing their opinions and it’s definitely raising awareness on the issue, but nothing has been done to start solving it.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, both black and white communities views cops as unaccountable and think police use inappropriate force. In some cities, the Department of Justice has rolled out a program where officers are required to wear a front facing cameras on their bodies the entire time they are on duty. In those communities they have found a decrease in the use of force from officers and also in complaints about officers from the public.

Testing and Iterations

I was testing for concept and ease of use. We needed Guardian to be able to be used easily and quickly by people who are in traumatic situations. From iterations after testing, the flow changed around to be more intuitive and made the main functions the clear priority on each screen.

Solution

Guardian is the ideal solution to the lack of transparency regarding police behavior. This will give american citizens and other police officers a safe place to put their experiences on what is happening around them on a day-to-day basis. Anyone with the app can report in real time or have help sent directly to them in an emergency situation.

The app can generate the current location, date and time. Using that information, a list of officers working in the district will populate and allow you to filter by different characteristics. Once the officer is found, it will allow you to enter the report and upload and pictures/videos you may have of the incident. The report then gets sent to the  chief of police. Chief will able to see all reports made on all his officers to see what’s going on outside of the department, when they are out in the field.
